Geordie Translations

It has now been 3 months since I arrived in Newcastle on a cold, drizzly morning after a long journey from St. Louis, Missouri. In my short time here, I’ve tried sausage rolls at Greggs, gone out for Sunday roast, stepped inside an 840-year-old medieval castle, trekked through the diamond strip crowds, tasted black pudding & haggis (and loved it!), moved into a beautiful city centre flat, and earned a job at the top advertising agency in the North East.

Not even outsiders to Newcastle can deny the beautiful culture that defines this city. And of all the things I’ve experienced so far, the unique language is, by far, the most intriguing. Newcastle is the home of the Geordie accent, which is native to England's northeast and has evolved over hundreds of years... with roots all the way back to the Vikings! As an American transplant among a crowd of Geordies in my new office, I’ve done my best to note the key lingo differences...
