I have recently discovered the beauty of working out first thing in the early morning. In addition to the beautiful smell of crisp morning air, working out first thing in the day is a great way to wake up and energize your body naturally. The mornings when I wake up early to exercise are definitely the ones I don't need a cup of coffee to keep myself going. All I need is a nice creamy, freshly blended smoothie after my workout to start my day with an extra bounce in my step!
Some of my favorite breakfast smoothie ingredients include bananas, strawberries, mangoes, kale, spinach, flaxseed, milk, fat-free yogurt, peanut butter, and last but not least, protein powder.

Contrary to what many women think, protein powder isn't just for guidos and gym rats. While it's true that my boyfriend (a personal trainer) throws protein powder into just about anything he can, he's also convinced me that it's a beneficial ingredient even when you're not working out. Even though it's a great way to end a morning workout, don't hesitate to make a breakfast smoothie any other day as well!
Protein powder is now my favorite smoothie ingredient - it is an easy component to add to any smoothie recipe that actually reduces your tendency to snack throughout the day. Having that extra protein in your diet fills you up faster and will keep you feeling fuller longer, so it's a strong way to start your day! In fact, I now mix it into my oatmeal and yogurt as well!
I've been a longtime smoothie fan - beginning back as a child sipping on ice cream-filled, fruit smoothies with whipped cream toppings. However, I love smoothies so much more now... while they taste just as delicious as always, now they can be guilt-free & beneficial, too!
